Whether you run 5Ks, marathons or just try to beat your personal best every time you head out the door, shaving seconds off your time is always the plan. Doing so, however, is often easier said than done. There are some little tricks that can go a long way when those seconds do matter.

Perhaps one of the easiest ways runners in Brighton can shave time off their finishes involves simple strengthening. Lifting weights to increase tone and definition, but not necessarily bulk, can help take you the distance faster.

Don’t believe it?

A study recently published in the Journal of Applied Physiology revealed that eight weeks of resistance training improved experienced runners’ 5K times by as much as 30 seconds. That’s a pretty big deal in the running world!

To get started with resistance training, just put those weights you own to good use. Or, better yet, stop by your local fitness center or gym where the equipment in place is ideal for the type of workout you’re looking for.

Here are some other tips that can help you gain strength in your legs and body while working to shave time off your running finishes:

  • Exercise at home – There are a number of strength training exercises that don’t require any real equipment at all. Work on lunges, reverse lunges and other similar exercises right in the comfort of your own home. These will build strength without necessarily adding to your bulk.
  • Exercise on the go – When you’re out and about take simple actions that can help tone your muscles even more. Park as far away from doors as possible and brisk walk to your destination. Skip the elevator and go for the stairs.
  • Get wet – Swimming is one of the best overall exercises for increasing muscle tone throughout the body. While it doesn’t necessarily offer the resistance of weight training, it can help produce results without building so much muscle your bulk begins to slow you down. Plus, it’s just a great dovetail activity with running since it’s a great endurance builder.
  • Get help – When you’re focusing on shaving time off your runs, one of the best things you can do is seek professional help. The experts at your fitness center or gym can help you put together a plan that increases your muscle tone while boosting your ability to run farther faster. It can also be very beneficial to work directly with a personal trainer that specializes in running. Many fitness centers have these pros on staff to help clients prepare for 5Ks, 10Ks and marathons.
